Dr. Trinkunas is nonresident senior fellow in the Latin America Initiative in the Foreign Policy Program at the Brookings Institution. He is also associate director for research and senior research scholar at the Center for International Security and Cooperation of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University.

His expertise includes Latin American politics – particularly foreign policy, governance and security issues. He also assesses the influence of outside power, i.e., China’s presence in the region.

After all, the focal point of American irritation, Cuba’s longtime leader Fidel Castro died on November 25. He had not been active in person but he had been influential in spirit since his brother Raúl took over the presidency.

Earlier in the year, in March, President Barak Obama became the first sitting president to visit Cuba since Calvin Coolidge’s trip in 1928.

The Council’s speaker is Carla Anne Robbins, adjunct senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. She is an award-winning journalist and foreign policy analyst, having served as deputy editorial page editor at The New York Times and chief diplomatic correspondent at The Wall Street Journal. Her reporting career took her to Latin America, Europe, Russia and the Middle East.

In his 2012 book No One’s World; The West, the Rising Rest and the Coming Global Turn, he wrote, “The twenty-first century will not be America’s, China’s, Asia’s or anyone else’s. It will belong to no one.”
